Retailers and office staff in Bembridge village are blocking parking spaces and preventing customers from shopping in the village. That at least is the considered view of Bembridge Business Association, which has sent a letter to all central Bembridge retailers in an effort to address the problem.
Committee member Willemina Hagenauw said that the main problem was that people who work in the shops in Bembridge like to park their cars in front of the shop. "By doing so, customers cannot find parking spaces, have no easy access to the shops and decide to go elsewhere," said Willemena. "This results in thousands of pounds of potential takings being spent at other places, like Ryde."
To date, the BBA letter has met with a positive response from most shops and it is hoped that as a result, parking will become easier. However, there is a dark cloud on the horizon, which could seriously affect the business community and its customers in Bembridge.
The Isle of Wight Council has proposed the introduction of parking restrictions in the centre of Bembridge using double yellow lines to ease the flow of predominantly heavy traffic (such as coaches and trucks) through the village.
"The BBA believes that double yellow lines should only be placed on one side of the High Street so that parking is still possible for people who simply want to pop into a shop for a few minutes," said Willemina. The BBA is proposing a suitable response to the Council's proposals and will let the Council know their position on the double yellow lines.
